How to Read This Matrix

Independence describes editorial control, not theological faithfulness. Official outlets are published by the LCMS or its entities. Aligned outlets are editorially independent but consistently loyal to Synod leadership. Ind. Clergy outlets are run by rostered church workers — free from institutional control, but still subject to the soft constraints of roster status, collegial relationships, and ecclesiastical supervision. Ind. Lay outlets are owned and operated by laypeople with no roster to protect, no call to jeopardize, and no institutional levers available to pressure them into silence. This is a meaningful distinction: lay independence is structurally more durable. Oppositional outlets define themselves primarily in contrast to the current administration. PAC indicates dark-money political funding.

Theology is a broad brushstroke: Confessional denotes commitment to the Lutheran Confessions and Biblical inerrancy. High Church emphasizes liturgical traditionalism and sacramental theology. Institutional reflects the theological center of the Synod bureaucracy. Progressive indicates openness to practices the Confessional wing considers heterodox.

Editorial Focus tags describe the primary modes of content production. Most outlets blend several, but the leading tags capture the dominant character. News means original reporting. Data means quantitative analysis. Watchdog means institutional accountability. Commentary is opinion. Polemic is combative advocacy. Catechetical is teaching. Cultural is engagement with secular culture from a theological frame.

Generational Skew is estimated, not measured. It reflects where the readership appears to concentrate based on format, tone, platform, and referral patterns. Outlets built on print, radio, and longform blog formats tend to skew older. Digital-native outlets with social distribution tend to skew younger.

Vitality reflects the outlet's current trajectory. Growing means demonstrably increasing in reach and output. Active means publishing regularly. Static means publishing but not growing. Dormant means the outlet has gone quiet but is not formally closed. Extinct means it is effectively dead.
